I think taking unpopular but principled stands, very publicly, is a key aspect of moral leadership. It's the public part of it that distinguishes acts likes these from merely "being in a very conscious way."
Here's something from Cheryl Jacques, until recently the head of the Human Rights Campaign. It is widely believed that she was fired from HRC for refusing to back down from a strong pro-gay marriage stand after the elections. Hers is a welcome voice.
